The atmosphere is lively as we take the walk from the local Tlingit Tribe Cultural Center to Reliance Harbor in Wrangell. Sixth-grader Devin Aleksiev is already wearing his life jacket, which he shows he can put on even if it’s already on.

“It will hurt your wrist a lot if you wear a watch,” Aleksiev said, stopping to take off his watch. He says he loves everything about the culture camp and is happy to be here.

“I just wasn’t happy when I woke up,” he adds wryly.

About 15 middle school students (entering grades six to eight) attend Wrangell Culture Camp 2021. The camp is focused on STEAM – that is, science, technology, engineering, art and math, helping Wrangell children gain cultural knowledge and learn about careers in the community .

“Last year was the first year and we had a virtual summer camp last year, because of COVID,” says Paul Leininger. He is the coordinator of the STEAM project based in Juneau with the Sealaska Heritage Institute. “This year, we wanted to go out and reach all six communities, instead of bringing kids to Juneau during COVID. We thought it would be a great opportunity to send everyone – to send adults to communities and serve children where they are.

For example, SHI runs similar camps in Juneau, Sitka, Hoonah, Angoon, and Klawock, with the help of a federal grant from the Alaska Native Education Program.

“They all have their own local touch,” says Leininger, “They all do something unique. [We’re] really excited to see how everyone can experience their own community and STEAM careers in their community.

The weather is generally fine outside, with a strong breeze. Strange jellyfish-like contraptions made from plastic bottles and nylon stockings float from the hands of a few children. Aleksiev points to one and explains the exercise: “We made plankton nets, and we’re going to catch plankton, and then we’re going to examine them under a microscope. “

Hopefully the jellyfish-like contraptions will concentrate the microscopic aquatic creatures in a small sample bottle. Camp participants will bring this water back to the cultural center, where half a dozen microscopes are ready.

Aleksiev is delighted to have the opportunity to look at something alive under the microscope.

“I already bought a microscope,” he says, “But it sucked. And all it gave me to watch was dandruff. Literally it just gave me dandruff to watch.

On the floatplane dock, Kim Wickman gathers the campers to explain the experience. The children drop the makeshift nets from the wharf and advance in single file, scraping the surface of the water with their stockings.

Wickman is the Indian General Assistance Program Coordinator for the Wrangell Cooperative Association. It is a large-scale job. Today, she is an expert in plankton collection and analysis.

After having paid his trawl fees, eighth grade pupil Phebe Garcia walks away to the wharf side. She says she appreciates the opportunity to explore different careers in science and other outdoor fields, although she doesn’t see herself ending up in field work.

“I don’t really like going out,” Garcia said. “If I get bitten by a bug, I swell, so I like to stay inside. I think it’s fun, however, to learn this stuff. And I think other people [here] want to work outside.

Trying to catch microorganisms in homemade gear is just one of the many activities on the cultural camp program. The children heard presentations from the Forest Service and a local tour operator. They paddled canoes, made their own paddles, listened to traditional songs and stories, and took Tlingit language lessons all week. This ends with an overnight trip to Kaats’litaan, Old Willow Town, the historic site of Wrangell.

Returning to the cultural center, Tlingit bead artist Florence Marks Sheakley sits hunched over a partially complete blue flower pattern the size of a palm tree.

“They want me to make beads,” said Sheakley, stopping his needle. “So that’s what I do with the kids. I teach them to bead.

Sheakley says she has been attending Wrangell Culture Camps for a few years now. Under his watchful eye, children can create their own patterns of small beads.

In another corner of the building, hopefully with water bottles filled with plankton in tow, six children at a time are bending over microscopes, supervised by IGAP coordinator Wickman.

“So you see the little guy moving around here in that kind of corner,” Wickman said, looking into a microscope. “He’s a Tintinnid. And he’s actually zytoplankton, and he’s actually hunting. So he tries to find other little creatures that he can absorb into himself for lunch.

“Oh my God!” someone exclaims at the table.

Eighth-grade student Ben Houser peeks through one eye in his microscope.

“Basically, just a bunch of debris,” Houser says, adjusting the slide to the light of the microscope. “Little plants… I think there’s a bunch of little wavy lines that – everything’s moving because there’s too much water in my slide. “

That’s sort of what he hoped to identify on his microscope slide.

Houser describes his dream slide: “Algae, maybe a shark. We could always wish.

It remains to be seen what Houser will call his favorite cultural camp moment, although realistically it won’t be finding a shark in a water sample in Wrangell Harbor.

FAIR like most people with chronic illness, Rocyie Wong (Photo) came to terms with the physical pain.

But overcoming the emotional pain has been difficult, made worse by ineffective and sometimes damaging advice from friends and relatives.

But today, Wong has made that weakness his strength, using his experience with psoriasis to get others to open up about their condition and advocate for the understanding of others.

Wong’s journey began when she was nine years old.

“It started with flakes on my hair that I assumed was dandruff. It wasn’t that bad. Just a lot of white stuff on my shoulders, ”she said the sun.

Two years later, his scalp started to itch, causing him to scratch it so vigorously that it started to bleed and became painful to the touch.

“I woke up with a head injury and blood stains on my pillow.”

Yet Wong still thought it was normal.

“I thought it was just a skin condition that would go away if I applied a skin cream, but it only got worse,” she said.

It was only by chance that she was later diagnosed with psoriasis. A friend had wanted to test a product on her scalp, but was told to see a doctor instead.

At 14, she was diagnosed with psoriasis, an autoimmune disease that causes red, itchy, scaly patches on the skin.

The Malaysian Dermatological Society has estimated that it affects 500,000 to 800,000 Malaysians.

Although it appears to be cosmetic, the National Psoriasis Foundation explained that the disease is caused by an overactive immune system, resulting in the overproduction of skin cells.

Multiple visits to skin specialists gave the same diagnosis and prognosis – there is no cure.

“As a teenager it was heartbreaking.”

Wong then retreated into her shell, while friends and family members tried to persuade her to take various remedies.

“One that I remember was applying a paste of cooked garlic to my skin and wrapping it in cling film. It ended up burning my skin.

Likewise, traditional herbs made no difference. Eventually, Wong told her parents that she didn’t want to be treated like a lab rat anymore.

In college, she studied nutrition and then began a plant-based diet. She graduated three years ago.

“I was too sick to do anything other than stay home to take care of my body,” she said.

It was then that she took the time to research recipes that she believed would help alleviate her suffering.

It is also at this time of
a personal reflection that led to a new cause: Speaking publicly about your journey with psoriasis as part of a 23-day Project Naked campaign.

His thoughts on his Instagram account @safespace_my have attracted 12,100 followers. She used the platform to offer her support and empower those who were fighting the same fight.

Wong said she was initially afraid of what her campaign might lead to, but was surprised by the show of support. This led to a new project called Safe Space.

“It started as a physical space in which everyone can talk about their pain, but the Covid-19 pandemic made it necessary to put the forum online. Today, it has followers from all over the world.

Wong’s battles also led to a new calling: being a holistic nutritionist. Overall, she said it had been a healing experience.

Are you a man who suffers from hair loss? Read this article to know the causes and how to stop your hair loss problems.

Did you know that we all lose around 100 strands of hair a day? It may come as a surprise to a lot of people, but it’s actually healthy and necessary to keep your head filled with luscious hair.

However, it becomes a problem when you keep losing more hair than normal. Hair loss is not only a health problem, but also quite embarrassing for many people. If you are suffering from hair loss and want solutions then you have come to the right place.

There are many causes of hair loss. Genetics, hormonal imbalance, medicinal side effects, and the use of the wrong hair products are some of the most common causes of hair loss. One of the most practical solutions to this problem is to use hair loss products. In this article you will find other ways to stop hair loss.

Use a mild shampoo

Never forget to turn around and learn when shopping for products. Check the ingredient list for your shampoo. As important as it is to wash your hair regularly to maintain good hygiene, it is also essential to avoid shampoos that contain harsh chemicals, such as sulfates and parabens. These chemicals remove nutrients from your scalp, causing excessive dryness which can lead to dandruff and eventually hair loss.

Vitamin supplements

One of the most common causes of hair loss is a lack of vitamins in the diet. Vitamin A helps your scalp produce a healthy amount of sebum which keeps your scalp and hair hydrated; Vitamin B helps prevent graying and works to maintain healthy color for your hair; Vitamin E helps in good blood circulation, which is needed to stimulate hair follicles to produce healthy new hair.

If you are suffering from hair loss, there is a good chance that your diet is lacking in vitamins. Vitamin capsules are widely available as an over-the-counter medication. Take a bottle to see if it works for you.

Increase protein intake

Proteins are a major component of hair. Hair is made up of keratin which is a protein. So if you lose a lot of hair or see your hair break down often, it could be due to a lack of protein. Start snacking on foods like eggs, lean meats, fish, and soy for best results.

Oil massage

Massaging your scalp with essential oils will help improve your blood circulation, and thus promote hair growth. Many people find it uncomfortable and unappealing to put oil in their hair because they have to come out with oily hair. These days there are many non-sticky oils you can choose from. Or, you can schedule a massage session twice a week on days you don’t need to go out.

Do not brush wet hair

When your hair is wet, it is more likely to break. In addition, the follicles are soft when wet and can easily fall out when you brush your teeth. So it is best to let your hair dry and then style it as you wish.

If you go out immediately after a shower and need to brush your hair, use a wide toothbrush or just use your fingers to untangle your hair.

Onion juice

When life gives you onions, rub them on your scalp and flip that gorgeous hair over. Onion juice has been proven to have incredible benefits, both in preventing hair loss and promoting new hair growth. Likewise, garlic and ginger juice can also be used. Rub a slice of either and make sure the juice covers your entire scalp. Keep it on for half an hour and then wash it off. Repeat this periodically and you will see noticeable changes in a few months.

Stay hydrated

Between 12 and 15% of your hair contains water, so it is necessary to stay hydrated. Always remember that using beauty products on the outside is secondary and staying healthy on the inside is paramount. Try to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. This is not only important for preventing hair loss, but it also keeps your skin healthy and detoxifies your body as well!

Green tea scrubs

Don’t throw away your green tea bags after your morning tea. Instead, rub them on your scalp. Green tea contains epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) which inhibits hormones responsible for hair loss. It also helps in the growth of new hair. You will see results in just half a month if applied regularly.

Appropriate use of towels

After a good shower, we all tend to rub our hair with a towel. You may be wondering where this is wrong. By rubbing your hair on a rough surface like your towel, your hair breaks and falls out more easily. Press and dry excess water instead and try letting your hair air dry.

Avoid alcohol

Excessive alcohol consumption disrupts hormonal functions and the absorption of appropriate nutrients in the body. So, if you are a heavy drinker suffering from hair loss, you may want to cut down or avoid alcohol consumption altogether.

Avoid smoking

“Smoking is bad for your health” – not only by damaging your lungs and heart, but also by causing your hair to fall out. Smoking reduces optimal blood flow to the scalp, which inhibits healthy hair growth.

Regular exercise

Training or participating in a physical activity promotes well-being. Activities like walking and swimming help release good hormones and maintain good blood circulation. Exercise plays an important role in stopping hair loss.

Less stress

Stress can lead to many serious health problems. If you’re suffering from stress, it’s time to take a step back and find ways to relax. Stress is a crucial factor in hair loss. You can practice yoga or meditation for half an hour every day to relax. Let’s face it, there will always be stressful situations in everyday life. As stress is inevitable, it’s important to follow routines that will help you de-stress as well.

Heating and drying

Using too much heat on your hair breaks the structure of proteins, causing them to break down. Over-drying can also make your hair frizzy, brittle, and weak. So, try to limit the use of heat and let your hair dry naturally.

Stay sweat-free

A sweaty scalp can cause your hair to fall out. After exercising, make it a habit to take a shower soon after. If you usually wear a hat or helmet, dry your scalp when you take them off. Use shampoos that contain aloe vera or neem to leave a feeling of freshness.

Try a different style

If you have long hair, you are likely to put your hair in a bun or a ponytail to keep it out of the way. While it can be handy, pulling the hair too hard will help it fall out. Change up your hairstyles so that they are loose and don’t pull too hard on your follicles.

Health is wealth

Taking care of your overall health is essential for preventing hair loss. If you have a condition that causes hair loss, it is unlikely that a hair loss product will help. So, stay healthy, see a doctor if necessary, and see how your hair changes with it.

Medicines

Many drugs can cause hair loss as a side effect. If you are taking any medication, see your doctor to see if this is causing the problem and if you can use alternative medicine instead.

Check your hair dyes

The chemicals in hair dyes or other hair products can be harmful to your hair. Remember to check if there are any harmful or harsh chemicals in your product before using it.

Regular doctor’s appointments

Do you see your doctor regularly? Our bodies can have hormonal imbalances, stressful situations, medical conditions, and skin issues that can lead to hair loss. Sometimes these problems can be asymptomatic. It is therefore important that you visit your doctor regularly to make sure that you are in good health.

Hair loss problems and their causes vary from person to person. But by following the tips mentioned, you can work to get your beautiful, luscious hair back.

Do you suffer from a dry, itchy and peeling scalp? When your head starts to itch, it’s okay to assume that you have dandruff, but you might actually have a dry scalp. From white flakes to an extremely itchy scalp, dandruff and dry scalp can share symptoms, but they are two different conditions that require separate treatments. So what’s the difference?

If you scratch yourself or see flakes in your hair, Dr Roger Henderson explains how to tell the difference between dandruff and a dry scalp, and the best treatment:

What is dandruff?

Dandruff is a common skin condition that results from the buildup of dead skin on the scalp to form gray or white flakes, which are visible up close or if they fall on your shoulders. You are constantly producing new skin cells and shedding old cells and dandruff can appear when this cycle of skin renewal is accelerated.

Dandruff is perfectly harmless and non-contagious, but it can be unsightly if you have white flakes on your clothes and it can be difficult to treat. If your scalp is dry and itchy, it may be due to dandruff. Dirty hair doesn’t cause dandruff, but if the hair isn’t washed often enough, oil can build up on it and contribute to flaking. There are several causes of dandruff including:

1. Fungal infections

Fungal infections can cause excessive growth of skin cells. One of the most common is called malassezia, which normally lives on the scalp and is harmless but can be present in excess in young people and cause skin cells to multiply too quickly.

2. Seborrheic dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis is a skin condition that primarily affects fatty areas of the body (ie.

3. Eczema

Eczema is a condition that causes inflammation and itching of the skin.

However, a dry itchy scalp that does not respond to treatment with an anti-dandruff shampoo may be due to a natural loss of moisture, so alternative treatments should be considered.

The difference between dandruff and a dry scalp

If you’ve tried dandruff shampoo without success, there is a difference between having a dry scalp and dandruff, maybe this is the reason why the shampoo does not work. With a dry scalp the skin becomes irritated and inflamed and flakes while with dandruff the cause is too much oil produced on the scalp skin. This causes the skin cells to build up and then shed, giving the typical appearance of dandruff on the hair and clothing (usually on the shoulders) of those affected.

A dry itchy scalp can occur if the natural water balance of the scalp is disturbed. A dry scalp can be caused by:

  • Skin Conditions Such As Dermatitis /psoriasis

  • Hormonal changes, with aging in general

  • External factors such as changes in temperature or seasons

  • Environmental pollution

  • Certain hair treatments where there is a reaction to products such as gels, hairsprays and shampoos. This causes a condition called contact dermatitis.

There are some key ways to tell the difference between dandruff and a dry scalp. With dandruff, there are large flakes of oily skin that are yellow or white, with an itchy scalp and red, oily skin on the scalp. However, with a dry scalp, the dander is smaller and drier, as well as an itchy scalp and often dry skin on other parts of the body, with the dander usually disappearing once you apply a moisturizer. (unlike dandruff).

So if you don’t have white or gray dandruff in your hair but your scalp is itchy and dry, it may be a good idea to try a scalp treatment to help restore the natural balance of the hair. hydration.

Try Shampoo for dry scalp E45 or AVEENO® Soothing Soothing Shampoo – both can help treat a dry scalp and restore water balance.

When to see a doctor about dandruff

If you have been using an anti-dandruff shampoo for at least a month without improvement, if your scalp becomes sore and redder, or if the skin on the scalp becomes more and more inflamed or the inflammation is spreading then seek medical advice. . This will help make an accurate diagnosis as there may be a different skin condition that needs to be treated such as eczema or psoriasis.

Treatment of dandruff and dry scalp

Although dandruff is not curable and must be managed over many years, for most people, following a few simple tips can go a long way in reducing the effect of dandruff and a dry scalp:

✔ Avoid greasy hair products

Try to avoid using harsh or strong hair products that contain alcohol or bleach as they dry out the scalp quickly. Also avoid oily hair products to prevent excess sebum build-up.

✔ Use an anti-dandruff shampoo daily

If you have dandruff, use anti-dandruff shampoo every day, making sure to rinse your hair thoroughly afterwards. Most of these shampoos contain drugs to kill any fungus and get rid of scaly skin – look for products that contain some of the following:

  • zinc pyrithione

  • Salicylic acid

  • coal tar

  • Ketaconazole

  • Selium sulphide

✔ Try tea tree oil

If you want to use a natural dandruff product, try shampoos that contain tea tree oil. These can cause an allergic reaction in a very small number of people who use them, so stop them if you develop redness or irritation on the scalp.

✔ Get some sun

There is some evidence that sun exposure is helpful if you have dandruff, so try to spend some time in the sun every day, but also be careful not to get too much sun on your skin.

✔ De-stress

Anxiety and stress can make things worse for some people, so practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, yoga, and meditation.

The time to start thinking about preparing patients for surgery is not when they want or need it, but rather during pre-visits. Another way to phrase this obvious yet seemingly unrealized mode of healing is to prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

The ocular surface is the refractive epicenter of the eye and therefore requires full attention at every encounter with the patient. Research has shown that there is a cumulative effect of inflammation and dryness that can not only prevent healing, but also impair surgical stones.1.2 Further research shows that the meibomian glands are negatively affected at increasingly early ages.

So how can ODs fight this? It’s all about anticipation. The simplest answer to the question “When do we start planning to prepare the ocular surface for possible surgery?” Is: “On your last visit”.

Proactive mindset

Take the edict that every patient is a dry eye patient until proven guilty. Each meibomian gland begins to atrophy or the meibum is altered until eyecare professionals do not see these changes. All lids have an overabundance of Demodex, especially cylindrical films, unless you can’t see them, because you watched.

Eye care clinicians are responsible for protecting eyesight, but we don’t use our sight or insight when we need to prevent surface damage.

As an ideological posture, assuming everyone has ocular surface disease (OSD) until proven guilty works if we live and work in a vacuum. However, the eyes of this generation are taxed more than others. It is naive to think that the OSD won’t show its ugly head if we indulge in some pesky OSD modification habits uncontrollably. In other words, we can’t expect that continued use of our sights won’t erode the OSD faster and faster without doing something to slow it down. I tried with my teeth, and let me say I should have flossed for decades.

Preventive care

The good news is that ophthalmologists have many unobtrusive and intuitive options to help patients prepare early for a post-OSD era. For example, a universal battle cry of all ophthalmologists is now: “Stop, collaborate and look away from your monitor!” This is the old 20/20/20 rule modified to sound cooler like a one-hit 1980s wonder.

Equip patients wearing contact lenses with daily disposable lenses, integrate eyelid hygiene, use anti-inflammatory immunomodulatory drops to increase tear production (and increase wearing time) are efforts to prevent the brain drain. drop out of contact lenses around 40 or 50 years old.

Regular use of a moist heat mask on the eyelids, at a younger age, will prevent meibomian gland obstruction? Most likely. At best, it can be like brushing your teeth every day while consuming an oral cornucopia of sugary treats. To break this down, anything we do now will only help in the future.

Now, without the ability to go through with Doc Brown and go back to the future, ODs have to become myopic while preparing a patient for surgery. Fortunately, ODs have some treatment tips.

Treatment options

This year, eye care practitioners saw the first approval of a topical corticosteroid (Eysuvis, 0.25% Loteprednol Etabonate Ophthalmic Suspension; Kala Pharmaceuticals) indicated for short-term treatment (up to 2 weeks). ) signs and symptoms of dry eye (DED).

Another option available is the use of an amniotic membrane to improve overt dryness or help smooth irregular corneas with corneal dystrophy. Although the latter may require corneal debridement in coordination with a cryopreserved amniotic membrane, the former can be treated with a cryopreserved membrane alone.

Another quick and important part is to clean the eyelid margin of the offending inflammatory debris. Microblepharoexfoliation treatments can accomplish this before any surgical treatment. Using hypochlorous acid to clean the lids has also been very effective in eradicating pesky insects quickly.

Focusing on the eyelids is easier with meibography. Similar to using tomography to help with refractive surgery, meibography gives a landscape of the glands. Not only does this visual assess the current and future potential of the glands, but it is a clear picture from which patients can understand the consequences of their actions. Meibography, in my opinion, should be performed at all examinations regardless of the patient’s age. By using the symptoms and the glands as a road map, we can prepare patients for other treatments.

Thermal pulsation may be required prior to the presurgical evaluation. However, when more time is available, an Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) procedure could and should be implemented.

Conclusion

ODs feature countless examples of proactive preparation without thinking twice. We owe it to our patients to start a preoperative dialogue and a course of treatment well before any actual procedure. When is the right time to implement this mindset? I would put the year in the DeLorean at 1985, or at least now.

Summers can be bad luck for your hair. But Dr Blossom Kochhar has some remedies up his sleeve

Hair loss is a major concern for many women around the world, and if you are one of them, there are many treatments that can help with this problem.

The only problem is that not everyone has enough time to visit the salon to get one of these treatments. With a busy schedule, taking the time to get your hair groomed can be a problem. However, a smart and effective way to prevent and permanently stop hair loss is to try homemade hair masks.

For hair damaged by the sun

Hair damaged by the sun needs proper care, especially if you are in the sun often or if your hair has been chemically treated. UV rays weaken your hair shaft and tone down your hair color.

Make a nourishing pack at home by mixing a banana with a teaspoon of cream and a quarter of a teaspoon of castor oil. Put it on for half an hour and rinse thoroughly. It might take one or two washes for the banana to completely pass through the hair, this is the best nourishing hair pack that you can easily make at home

For oily hair

Oily hair can be very difficult to maintain. You are always busy scheduling your hair wash and wondering if you wash your hair too much. In addition, lubrication becomes impossible. In addition, hair masks make the scalp more oily and you just wish you had dry hair. Coconut milk is the healthiest natural ingredient for healthy hair. If you have oily hair, you should try mixing freshly extracted coconut milk with a squeezed lemon and four to five drops of lavender essential oil. Leave it on for four hours and then rinse it off.

To promote hair growth

For those who want to know the best solution for hair growth, there is a very simple one in your kitchen. The vitamins, minerals and fatty acids contained in ginger promote hair stimulation, which leads to hair growth. Ginger contains gingerol which improves blood circulation and promotes hair growth.

Take a teaspoon of coconut oil, argan oil, ginger juice, and onion juice. Combine it with half a teaspoon of castor oil, two drops of lavender essential oil, and one drop of rosemary essential oil. Mix all this together and finally add a teaspoon of your conditioner. Apply it abundantly on your scalp and locks of hair, hold it for 30 minutes and then rinse it with your shampoo. You can use a light conditioner if your hair is too dry. It will not only make your hair grow faster, but also add shine to your hair.

For dry and brittle hair

Excessive use of hair dyes, chemicals, and sun exposure can make hair dry, brittle, and dull. But who would want that? A simple solution is therefore to make a conditioning pack at home.

Take one or two tablespoons of conditioner, depending on the length of your hair, and mix it with a teaspoon of glycerin and a quarter of a teaspoon of vinegar to give your hair shine with some drops of sandalwood essential oil. This pack gives instant shine and luster.

To treat dandruff

We all have a common enemy. Yes, dandruff. No matter how much oil we make, having dandruff in the summer due to sweating is inevitable. To fight this enemy, the best thing you can try is a pack consisting of half a tablespoon of lemon juice and a quarter of a teaspoon of vinegar. Use a cotton ball to apply this mixture all over your scalp. Comb your hair after application. It may cause irritation or itching, but don’t worry, that means it works. Do not do this more than once a week as too much can lead to hair loss.

Nothing beats a good hot oil massage

There is one thing we completely forget when we have damaged hair, we will go to salons for treatments and apply the most expensive hair care products, but we ignore the most powerful thing that can reverse hair damage. – a good massage with hot oil.

Take a tablespoon of coconut / olive oil and add a teaspoon of castor oil with three or four drops of lavender essential oil to it. Heat the mixture a little and gently massage the scalp and hair overnight. Shampoo it in the morning. Follow this routine at least once every two weeks as it is extremely beneficial.
