Many of us apply hair oils in an effort to bring more nutrition to our roots. But by applying the oil, massaging it and rinsing it several times to remove it, we lose a lot of hair and cause unnecessary breakage. This friction, the difficulty of spreading the oil and the doubt as to its correct penetration into the scalp are the reasons why scalp serums are so much better than hair oils.

How Scalp Serums Are Different From Hair Serums Or Hair Oils

Think of your scalp as your skin, because that is basically what it is: an extension of your skin, but with hair. It can flake, burst into boils and become blocked. On a scalp full of living cells, you cannot use what is used on the dead cells that make up the hair. Likewise, you don’t use skin serums on strands of hair.

Now, where scalp oils and scalp serums differ is in the quality of scalp absorption. The serums do not sit on the scalp like a greasy film. Instead, they seep into the skin – or scalp – causing the nutrients they carry to be absorbed. Most oils are not light enough for this and coat the skin instead of seeping in. This delivery system is therefore better for oily scalp types, as serums generally do not clog the scalp like oils do. It is also less messy and does not weigh down the hair.

Why scalp serums are essential in reducing hair loss

If the soil is not healthy, the plant will not grow. Apply this logic to your scalp. If it is irritated, the follicles will be too inflamed for the hair to grow properly. If it flakes, the roots will not have a stable ground to grow on and the hair will fall out. If it is clogged with dirt or oil, the hair will not grow from the follicle itself. This is why you might notice hair loss if you have dandruff or an unbalanced scalp that is too dry or oily. So, many hair loss problems need to be addressed at the root, and not just by applying products to the entire length of the hair.

The best scalp serums to try

Take a look at some of the options you could add to your routine.

Mama Earth Onion Scalp Serum

This light and easily absorbed scalp serum contains many moisturizing ingredients like aloe vera juice that calm the scalp. It also contains niacinamide, which is great for fighting inflammation, and onion, which contains sulfur to stimulate hair growth. In addition to that, it is enriched with extracts of brown algae and pea shoots to revitalize the scalp. Hence, it helps to balance and calm the scalp for healthier hair growth.

Plum Ginseng Scalp Relief Serum

Made with extracts of hibiscus, bhringraj, soy and wheat to promote hair growth, it is a watery, lightweight serum. The best part is that it is completely absorbed into the scalp and strands and does not leave any greasy or wet effect on the hair. This means you can go through your day as normal, with fluffy locks that look freshly shampooed, even after you apply it. Not all scalp serums have this benefit and most of them can weigh hair down. That’s why this one is so good!

The Body Shop Ginger Scalp Serum

Ideal for calming and soothing irritated, itchy and dry scalp, it contains sodium hyaluronate to hydrate the scalp, panthenol for barrier repair, lactic acid to fight fungi that promote dandruff and Salix Alba bark extract, which contains salicylic acid. So, it is not only the ginger oil per se that makes it effective in keeping the scalp clean and strong, but also the supporting ingredients!

On our list of annoying beauty problems we have, a dry scalp is in the top 10. There’s nothing fun about dealing with a dry, itchy, and flaky scalp day in and day out. “Is it dandruff? Could you feel a negative reaction to styling products? Or could a dry, tight scalp suggest something more serious? If you ask yourself these questions, you know that it can be difficult to find the root cause of your dry scalp. So we spoke to three scalp and hair experts to learn more about the causes and treatments of dry scalp.

What Are the Causes of a Dry Scalp?

Nicole Williams, head of hair care brand creation and communications, Headquarters, explains that a dry scalp can be caused by several factors. “Some of these can be an individual’s predisposition to dry skin, sunburn, or environmental changes,” she says. New Jersey-certified dermatologist and founder of NJ’s Skin Cancer and Cosmetic Surgery Center Adriana Lombardi, MD, adds that bleaching, shampooing, or using alcohol-based hair products can also exacerbate dry scalp and irritated.

Sometimes, however, a dry scalp can result from something a little less obvious. Penny James Salon certified trichologist Penny James says it could be due to a thyroid problem or extreme stress. “Hypothyroidism often results in dry skin, a dry scalp, brittle hair and hair loss,” she says. Increased stress levels can also trigger itchy and dry scalp. The disease is called neurodermatitis, and research shows that it can cause itchy, flaky, or red skin due to extreme stress, anxiety, emotional trauma, or depression.

What is the difference between dry scalp and dandruff?

Understanding the difference between dry scalp and dandruff can be tricky, given the similarities, such as itching and dandruff. However, the causes of these two conditions are different. “Dandruff is different from a dry scalp because it is caused by fungal overgrowth of the scalp, leaving a thicker white scale and leading to excessive sebum production,” says Dr. Lombardi.

A dry scalp, on the other hand, is simply dry skin. The best way to tell the difference is to watch the flakes. If it is dandruff, your scalp will be oily and you will notice thicker and more oily white or yellow flakes. If it is a dry scalp, the flakes will appear smaller and dry. Another way to find out is your skin type. If you have dry skin on the rest of the body, Williams says you may also experience a dry scalp.

How to get rid of a dry scalp?

The way you hydrate the dry skin on your face and body is how you should take care of your dry scalp. Use moisturizers and avoid styling products that dry out your hair and scalp. “Treat it by using moisturizing shampoos and conditioners, scalp treatments, using a humidifier at night, and decreasing bleaching, frequency of hair washing, and use of alcohol-based hair products.” , explains Dr. Lombardi.

– 38 Available at Sephora

The frequency with which you need to wash your hair depends on several factors such as the type of hair and skin, but if you are struggling with perpetual scalp dryness, avoid washing your scalp with daily hair. hot water as this could deprive the skin of necessary hydration. Instead, use lukewarm water, and when it’s wash day, Williams recommends sticking with moisturizers, like the brand’s dry root cleansing shampoo and hydrating conditioner.

– 7.48 Available at Walmart

James also recommends using a nourishing mask infused with soothing ingredients like moisturizing vitamin E, shea butter, and castor oil on the scalp once a week. “All of these ingredients combined will restore the moisture that skin and hair so badly need,” she says. (The Maria Nila Head and Hair Heal Mask is a great option that prevents and treats dryness and dandruff by hydrating the scalp and hair. It is also suitable for all skin types including sensitive skin.) Likewise she says to stay away from dry shampoo as they tend to dry out the hair and scalp.

– 28.59 Available at Walmart

If you find that your dry scalp isn’t improving despite incorporating these expert-approved tips into your routine, Williams recommends speaking with your dermatologist or trichologist to find the treatment plan that’s right for you.

Likewise, it is also important to switch to season-specific skincare routines – especially for the skin and Hair. With the high humidity levels during this season, acne breakouts, dull and oily skin, clogged pores or even excessive hair loss become common.

Dr Apratim Goel, cosmetic dermatologist and founder of Cutis Skin Solution, and beauty expert Tata Sky explains the importance of changing your skin care and hair care routine depending on the season.

Skin care

During monsoons, humidity makes the skin dull. In addition to this, there is also an increase in fungal infections. To remedy this, the following measures can be adopted:

* To close the pores and reduce fungal infections, crush half an aspirin tablet, dilute it in cucumber water. Store it in a bottle and spray it on the skin once a day.

* For a homemade antioxidant, mix the tomato pulp, aloe vera gel, and well crushed pomegranate. Apply it on the face and, if necessary, on the neck and shoulders. Keep it on for an hour

Skin care How do you take care of your skin and hair during the monsoon? (Source: Getty Images / Thinkstock)

* If you have oily skin, fuller’s earth (multani mitti) works well. Add a pinch of sandalwood and lime juice to make a paste. If available, grind a stick of sandalwood to make a fine powder. Apply it on the face and keep it only for 12-15 minutes

* To fight acne, empty a chamomile tea bag and grind the leaves with the turmeric and mint leaves. Mix well and apply on the face.

* Exfoliation of the skin during monsoons is very important. For a homemade blend, use coffee and sugar on the face. If you have any extra mixture left, add some argan oil and use it on your body. Papaya the pulp can also be added to the face mixture as it helps to whiten the skin

* If you notice a fungal infection, use oregano oil after diluting it with olive or coconut oil in a 1: 1 ratio.

Hair care

Some of the most well-known hair problems during the monsoon are an oily scalp, which leads to oily hair, severe dandruff, and itching. Treating these issues effectively is important, and you can do the same by adopting the following:

* To reduce smelly hair, heat chamomile tea in water and mix with an equal amount of apple cider vinegar. For the fragrance, add 5-6 drops of rosemary. Apply it on the scalp and hair and leave it on for 30 minutes

* To reduce frizz, use a homemade hair mask by mixing honey, banana, aloe vera and avocado and a few drops of oil. Apply the mask to the Hair and the scalp for 30 minutes. Wash to see the best results

* To reduce hair loss, soak fenugreek seeds overnight. Grind it the next morning and mix well with coconut milk and an egg white. Apply it on the scalp and leave it on for 30 minutes

* Dandruff is caused by a fungal infection, not a dry scalp. Therefore, avoid oiling your hair during the monsoon. Instead, to reduce dandruff, mix yogurt with apple cider vinegar and keep it for 20 minutes.

Although these recipes involve natural ingredients, it is necessary to check if you are allergic to some, said Dr. Goel. Therefore, do a patch test on your hand or thighs before trying these remedies.

“It’s a myth that you should avoid using a hair dryer. In fact, it is advisable to use a hair dryer during the monsoon, with the heating turned off. Let hair dry naturally leaves humidity in the hair, which can lead to a fungal infection, ”said Dr. Goel.

A myriad of scalp conditions can cause dryness and itching in the area, but not all of them are serious. Sometimes a dry, itchy scalp is the result of environmental factors such as changes in temperature or certain lifestyle factors such as excessive heat styling. Certain conditions that can cause a dry, itchy scalp require medical attention.

Dandruff is a common condition that can make the scalp dry, itchy, and scaly. Up to 95% of the population has or will have dandruff at some point in their life.

Contrary to popular belief, dandruff is not the result of poor hygiene, although not washing your hair regularly can make it more obvious. Some possible causes of dandruff include:

  • Seborrheic dermatitis
  • Tinea capitis (ringworm)
  • Eczema
  • contact dermatitis
  • Psoriasis
  • Cradle hat

Stress and cold can make dandruff worse.

Dandruff is generally harmless, but it can affect your self-esteem due to embarrassment. You can get rid of dandruff with an over-the-counter (OTC) anti-dandruff shampoo. The ingredients that are commonly found in these shampoos include:

  • Ketoconazole
  • Zinc pyrithione
  • Salicylic acid
  • Selenium sulphide
  • coal tar

When dandruff is caused by a skin condition like psoriasis or eczema, you will need treatment from a dermatologist.

Atopic dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis, also called eczema, is a skin condition that can cause the skin to become inflamed with itching. It is caused by a combination of an overactive immune system, genetics, environmental irritants such as tobacco smoke, and stress.

Eczema can cause a dry, itchy scalp. Other symptoms may include a red rash, swelling, lumps on the skin, crusty skin, and leathery patches of skin. Eczema on the scalp can affect people of all ages.

When to call a doctor

A dry, itchy scalp is usually not serious, but if you have severe itching and dryness with flaking skin, make an appointment with your healthcare professional. They can help you find the cause and the most effective treatments for the disease causing your symptoms.

Topical corticosteroids such as hydrocortisone are usually the first line of treatment. Topical calcineurin inhibitors may alter the way the immune system works by inhibiting the production of the enzyme calcineurin, which is involved in activating immune cells.

In severe cases, topical medications may not be strong enough to help. Immunosuppressive drugs may be needed to suppress the immune response.

It’s also important to identify the triggers that make your eczema worse and avoid them. You’ll also want to keep your scalp moist using lotions and creams, and minimize irritation with mild shampoo and lukewarm water.

Sunburn occurs when the skin is exposed to harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays for long periods of time. Sunburns can range from mild to severe, and if they occur on the scalp, it can lead to dry, itchy skin.

In some cases, sunburns can take up to 36 hours to fully develop, so it can be difficult to assess damage before then. Other symptoms of sunburn apart from dry, itchy skin include:

  • Redness in the area
  • Swelling of the skin
  • Pain
  • Bulbs
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Weakness
  • Confusion
  • Peeling skin

In severe cases, sunburn can cause a person to go into shock, leading to fainting, weakness, and low blood pressure. Shock requires immediate medical attention.

Sunburns should heal on their own and usually do so within a few weeks. Treatment may be necessary for severe cases. Treatment options may include:

  • Pain relievers such as ibuprofen (Advil), acetaminophen (Tylenol), or aspirin
  • A wet and cool compress

As your sunburn heals, you should also avoid further exposure to the sun.

Contact dermatitis

Contact dermatitis causes a red, itchy rash when your skin comes in contact with an irritant and can affect your scalp. There are three types of contact dermatitis:

  • Allergic contact dermatitis, which occurs when the immune system responds to a generally harmless allergen
  • Irritant contact dermatitis, which occurs when the skin comes in contact with an irritant that causes a rash and other symptoms
  • Photocontact dermatitis, which occurs when a substance on the skin reacts with UV rays from the sun, causing irritation

Besides the redness and itchiness of the scalp skin, other symptoms of contact dermatitis can include:

  • Urticaria
  • Cracked skin
  • Tender skin
  • Burning or tingling sensation in the area
  • Bulbs filled with liquid
  • Blisters that ooze and form or spread

Treatment is not always necessary because usually, once the allergen or irritant is cleared, symptoms will go away on their own. Therefore, treatment usually involves avoiding the thing that caused it. If this is not possible or if the rash is difficult to manage, you can:

  • Get medications from your doctor or local pharmacy to help relieve the symptoms of the rash, such as hydrocortisone and fluocinolone.
  • Use a cold compress to relieve the itching.
  • Take the oral steroid prednisone to relieve symptoms that do not respond to other treatments.

In severe cases, several sets of oral steroids may be needed. This will limit the action of the immune system and thus reduce the symptoms.

Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease caused by an overactive immune system that causes skin cells to produce more quickly than they can be eliminated. It can cause a red, itchy rash and dander on the scalp.

Other symptoms may include:

  • Cracked skin
  • Pain
  • Scales on the scalp

The exact cause of psoriasis is unclear, but certain things can trigger a flare-up, such as stress, skin damage, infections, and cold.

If psoriasis affects the scalp, treatment may include:

  • Medicated shampoos: Ingredients you should look for include salicylic acid and coal tar.
  • Steroid creams: These products must contain the corticosteroid clobetasol.
  • Phototherapy: Ultraviolet light on the scalp can help slow the growth of skin cells on the scalp.
  • Dithranol and vitamin D analogues: These can control the rate of growth of skin cells, thereby reducing the overgrowth that leads to the symptoms of psoriasis.
  • Organic Products : Drugs and therapies that suppress the immune system’s response can help reduce flare-ups of psoriasis by reducing inflammation in the body.

How to relieve dry scalp

Depending on the severity and the cause of your dry, itchy scalp, certain home remedies may help relieve the symptoms. If you think you have a health problem that is causing your dry, itchy scalp, see your doctor for an official diagnosis before trying any of the following:

  • Avoid products that can irritate and dry out the scalp to the point of itching.
  • Use shampoos that contain anti-inflammatory ingredients such as zinc pyrithione.
  • Use moisturizing treatments for the scalp.
  • Use oils that can help relieve dryness and itchy scalp, like coconut oil, jojoba oil, tea tree oil, and avocado oil.
  • Use a humidifier to help with dry air.
  • Use a cool compress on the area to relieve itching and pain and to prevent scratching.

Prevent dry scalp

Here are some ways to prevent a dry scalp:

  • Use shampoos that contain aloe to help bring moisture back into the scalp. Aloe has also been shown to improve the function of the skin barrier, which is the top layer of the skin designed to trap moisture while keeping bacteria and other pathogens out. By improving the skin barrier function, you can help retain more moisture on the scalp.
  • Use conditioners or other hair care products that contain mild or natural ingredients to help maintain the health of your scalp while keeping irritants away.
  • Wear a hat to protect your scalp from overexposure to UV rays.
  • Follow your doctor’s recommendations and take your medications as prescribed. Avoid triggers as best you can to help prevent flare-ups.

When was the last time you thought about the condition of your scalp? If luckily you’re not dealing with constantly oily roots or flakes and dandruff, I guess it isn’t very often. But lately, with the flow of innovative new exfoliating scalp products hitting the shelves, I’ve been wondering: Am I not washing my hair properly?

Like skin care, exfoliation is the foundation of a healthy foundation and the key to healthy hair. Neglecting your scalp health and improper or abrasive cleaning can lead to clogged follicles, itchy, scaly skin, or an overly oily scalp which can result in dull, bodyless strands. On the other hand, regularly exfoliating your scalp can greatly improve your hair growth while regulating its hydration and hydration.

Scalp scrubs and chemical exfoliators, such as serums and masks, are designed to remove scalp buildup, allowing natural oils to keep scalp and hair nourished. With proper regulation, it prevents dry scalp and overproduction of sebum, which can lead to dandruff. But if you are dealing with a healthy scalp, exfoliation is not necessary unless you have had an excessive amount of the product in your hair. A good rule of thumb is to exfoliate your scalp at least once every 10 washes.

After a hard workout or a day in the scorching sun, you might find your scalp (and hair) rather oily and oily from the sweat that collects around your roots. Because there’s no real way to stop a scalp from sweating – unless you want to fork out the cash for regular Botox injections – a quick fix to make it less sweaty is shampoo. dry. Usually formulated with moisture-absorbing corn or rice starch, a dry shampoo will soak up excess oil while also removing impurities, like dirt, from your hair. Some even have the power to soothe inflamed or scaly scalps with ingredients like oat milk, aloe vera, and niacinamide.

To find the best dry shampoos, we took a look at eight hairdressers on which ones they recommend. Their 12 favorites run the gamut, from dry shampoos for curly hair, to products that work best with darker shades, to options that offer a bit of volume as well.

Klorane Dry Oat Milk Shampoo

Four of the hairdressers we spoke with cited this Klorane product as their benchmark for a good all-round dry shampoo. Celebrity hairstylist Anthony Campbell, owner of Campbell & Campbell salon, told us it was “lightweight and great for all hair types.” Hairstylist Benjamin Talbott agrees that this dry shampoo is suitable for a variety of hair types and people with “very oily scalps.” As he explains, “the oat milk in this formula acts as an astringent to dry out excess oil while adding softness to the hair.” This dry shampoo is a bit better for the environment because it comes in a powder form, not an aerosol. Talbott notes that this means you have to “take it easy with this” during application to avoid product build-up. Hairdressers Henry de la Paz and Aviva Jansen Perea also recommended this dry shampoo, Perea adding that Klorane’s anti-oil dry shampoo would be worth considering if you find your scalp is getting super oily after a “particular workout.” sweaty or during the hot summer months. . “(It contains all of the same ingredients as well as nettle extract, which helps regulate oil production.)

Dove Invisible Dry Shampoo

“It’s the dry shampoo that I use over and over again, year after year,” says Perea. “It works 100% of the time on all hair types. It’s also by far the cheapest dry shampoo on the list. The formula “absorbs oil and dirt without being too powdery or leaving a cast that’s too white,” adds Perea, who says a few quick sprays are all you need to freshen up your hair.

Moroccanoil dry shampoo, dark tones

Since many dry shampoos leave a white tint on darker hair, hairstylists say dark hair should look for one specially formulated for their hair color, like this Talbott recommended dry shampoo. The spray is formulated with ultrafine rice starch which dissolves immediately when massaged into the scalp, preventing any dandruff residue from appearing on the roots. Talbott adds that it is “infused with argan oil and UV filters, which help hydrate and prevent sun damage.” As well as being ideal for dark hair, he adds that it is also “an ideal choice for natural frizzy, curly or textured hair because it won’t cause shrinkage.” Hairstylist Sahar Hissami, owner of Maeve in June salon, also recommends this product, telling us it has an appealing “fresh smell”.

Kristin Ess Style Brown Conditioner Dry Shampoo

For dark-haired people looking for something cheaper, Perea recommends this dry shampoo from Kristin Ess which she uses on clients before they step in front of a camera. “This product allows me to breathe easily knowing that when cameras flash, they don’t pick up any white powder,” she says. Unlike Moroccanoil Spray, which comes out in white, it actually has a neutral brown tint to help it blend in with darker hair colors. De la Paz also told us about this dry shampoo, noting that it lacks sulfates and parabens and contains vitamins that he says help nourish damaged hair from years of heat dyeing or styling.

Oribe Gold Lust Dry Shampoo

Two hairdressers praised Oribe’s dry shampoo. Hissami describes it as “smelling like a luxury perfume” and de la Paz promises it “is worth every penny.” The scent is based on the iconic Côte d’Azur scent of Oribe, which includes notes of bergamot, jasmine and sandalwood. While the smell is palpable, experts say it’s not too overwhelming. The formula, which is suitable for all hair types and textures, contains a blend of starches and is translucent, allowing it to quickly absorb oil and treat scalp impurities without weighing hair down or leaving hair behind. white spots.

IGK Premium Charcoal Detox Dry Shampoo

Those familiar with charcoal face or skin masks will recognize the ingredient in this dry shampoo that Hissami recommends for anyone in need of something more durable. She says the formula combines charcoal with white tea powder to create a dry shampoo that “deeply cleanses your scalp ”, regardless of hair type or texture. Its flagship ingredient helps lift dirt and absorb excess sebum, while white tea powder acts as a calming agent to prevent irritation.

R + Co Skyline Dry Shampoo Powder

Our experts have mentioned various dry shampoos from R + Co, but Skyline Dry Shampoo Powder is the most cited. One of her fans is Campbell, who says it’s not only great for minimizing the grime built up from sweat, but also for “extending your blow-dry or your style for the next couple of days.” The same oil-absorbing ingredient – diatomaceous earth – also adds a bit of texture and grip to hair, which helps extend styling. This dry shampoo also contains jojoba seed oil to help condition hair and add some shine. Hairstylist Jasmine Burnside calls it her “Favorite Dry Shampoo of All Time” because, like the Klorane product that tops our list, it’s a powder, not an aerosol. “I find it much more effective than an aerosol can at absorbing excess sebum from your scalp,” she says, noting that the powder formulation makes the product much more concentrated and therefore lasts longer. “I’ve had a bottle for almost two years,” says Burnside, who warns that it might not be best for darker hair because you “really have to work it out” if you apply too much or too much. close to your scalp.

Big Sexy Hair Dry Shampoo

Because oily and greasy hair can already look flat, hitting it with an extra volumizing product in addition to dry shampoo can make it even softer. Instead, de la Paz recommends using this Dry Shampoo from Sexy Hair to reduce oil and get volume in the process. “You’ll get the va-va-voom volume without product build-up,” he says. If you get that, he notes that you’ll want to apply it a little differently: in order to get maximum volume, you need to let this dry shampoo sit on your hair for two minutes before brushing or styling it.

Dry shampoo Hair by Sam McKnight Lazy Girl

Curly hair requires a lot of hydration, so using a dry shampoo can seem counterintuitive. But Talbott says this one works especially well for “thick, frizzy, and curly” hair. The ultralight translucent formula doesn’t dry out or weigh down delicate curls, and with notes of water lily, green stem and juniper wood, it also smells “sublime, like a breath of fresh air,” he promises. .

Philip Kingsley Flaky Scalp Soothing Dry Shampoo

Talbott calls it “the perfect solution if you have dandruff or scaly scalp issues.” As he explains, “it’s been formulated to target the root cause of dandruff and remove any excess oil, keeping you balanced and fresh.” The product absorbs oil with a blend of starches, while ingredients like bisabolol (a derivative of chamomile), niacinamide, aloe vera, and methyl lactate (a cooling agent) all work together to soothe and calm inflammation as well as to improve the appearance of the scalp.

Foam Dry Shampoo Yeah

Foam might seem like an odd texture for a dry shampoo, but Perea says it’s actually fantastic for volume, especially if you have thin, thin hair. “You give the box a really good shake, pump a golf ball-sized amount of foam and rub it on the scalp,” she says. “The moisture will dissipate and provide lift that is difficult to achieve with powder. The foamy consistency, she adds, makes it easier to dictate where the product goes. Plus, “this stuff smells amazing,” Perea says.

R + Co Badlands Dry Shampoo Paste

Paste is another atypical consistency for dry shampoo. But Perea says that, like a mousse, a paste can be easier to apply for anyone looking for precision. Echoing what we’ve heard about other R + Co dry shampoos on this list, she says this product gives great texture – texture you just can’t get with a spray. “The texture has this really unique grain that gives the hair such beautiful movement, such part and such shine,” she says. To apply it, she says to “take a grape-sized amount from your palms and rub them together to warm up the paste, then take your fingertips and part the hair.”

So many of us struggle to grow our hair to the desired length and be healthy when it does. If you are one of those people, surely you know how difficult this process can be, but onion oil can work well for hair growth. Dealing with constant hair loss every day is extremely excruciating, especially when you see the number of strands that come out with a single hair brushing, and the constant worrying thoughts that you are going to go bald very soon.

CHILDREN’s hair is much more fragile than that of adults, so it does not require the same amount of washing and treatment.

Regular washings are necessary. However, if you wash your little one’s hair too often, it can become harmful as their delicate scalp can be damaged.

For most children, daily shampoo can strip the hair of its natural oils – so parents should be careful not to over wash their hair.

From the age of nine, hair tends to grease more easily, so you can start washing your child’s hair more often each week.

Remember that certain lifestyle choices have an impact on your child’s hair regimen, like swimming lessons!

Don’t worry if this all sounds confusing to you, as we’ve spoken to the experts to find out exactly how often you should wash your children’s hair and which products to avoid.

Joyce French, hygiene expert at HomeHow, revealed that when parents wash their child’s hair, they should avoid using regular shampoo.

She said, “You should avoid using regular shampoo as they contain more potent chemicals that can cause scalp irritation.

“Instead, you should use a shampoo suitable for babies or children that will be more gentle on soft hair and sensitive scalps.”

Elsewhere, parenting expert and skilled early childhood practitioner Kirsty Ketley shared her tips on shampooing children’s hair.

The mom of two, who shares her advice on her website, said: “It is important to use shampoo designed for babies and children.

“Not only are these products gentle on the eyes, they are also free from artificial colors and parabens that are found in shampoos for adults and are not necessary for children.

“Older kids – maybe around eight years old – should use an adult shampoo fine, I think, but make sure it’s gentle.”

As adults, we love to apply conditioner to our hair to make it super silky and get rid of those impossible knots.

But cleaning expert Joyce insisted it’s not necessary for babies – and should only be used after the age of two – where it can help keep pesky nits away as well.

She advised, “You shouldn’t use conditioner on children under the age of two because baby’s hairs are very fine, so applying conditioner can be damaging.

“You can use a small amount of conditioner on children two years of age or older, because conditioning hair will make them easier to comb and softer.

“Conditioner will make it much easier to remove tangles during messy play sessions and may even help prevent nits.”

“If the hair is smoother, the nits will have nothing to hang on to.”

Meanwhile, parenting expert Kirsty agreed and said kid-friendly conditioners can be used on kids – but not babies.

She said: “Conditioner for kids is fine to use, especially if your child has knots and tangles, as it will help keep them to a minimum.”

Cleaning a child’s hair too often can lead to a dry scalp or even dermatitis, which can make the scalp sore or swollen, Joyce warned.

But she also explained that not washing your child’s hair often enough can lead to dandruff, brittle hair, and excess oil.

She added: “It can also lead to infection of the hair follicles.”

Parental expert Kirsty has revealed that there’s no real right or wrong with washing hair.

Babies are advised to wash their hair only once a week due to their sensitive skin, but Kirsty suggested there would be times when this would not be possible.

She said: “Obviously there will be weeks when your little ones have vomited and rolled in or at weaning they have food in their hair so it is good to wash if necessary.

“Too much washing can dry out the scalp, but if it needs to be washed, it needs to be washed!

“As children get older, you tend to notice that their hair is getting greasy.

“It will be different for each child, so some may need every other day, others two to three times a week. Again, if the hair needs to be washed, it needs to be washed!

Kirsty also added that it is not necessary to blow dry children’s hair – instead, just towel dry and let them dry naturally, which works best.

Joyce, HomeHow’s cleansing expert, said babies and children don’t produce as much scalp oil as adults.

Therefore, twice a week is enough to wash your child’s hair.

But she added that if your child has cradle cap, you should wash their hair more frequently and use a mild, fragrance-free shampoo.

If your child has sensitive skin, you should try looking for a soap-free shower gel to avoid irritation, Joyce recommended.

She said, “You should also avoid all products that contain parabens and sulfates because these chemicals are too harsh on a child’s skin.

“Avoid scented body cleansers as this can be itchy and make your child more uncomfortable. “
