LAPLACE – The first ribbon cutting in Saint-Jean-Baptiste Parish since Hurricane Ida was celebrated on Thursday as G&G Hair Designs opened its beautifully renovated new location at 534 Belle Terre Blvd. in place.
Owned by husband and wife team Gino and Gina Fortino, G&G Hair Designs is a Paul Mitchell Focus salon that has served St. John the Baptist Parish since 2009. The G&G team includes master stylists with over 30 years of experience. .
Customers have become family over the years, and these close relationships have helped Gino and Gina persevere after their former lounge on W. Airline Highway was wiped out by Hurricane Ida.
Gina Fortino said clients have watched them every step of the way as they put all their hearts and souls into securing a new location for the business.
“We have built relationships with the people in this community, and they depend on us for their hair. For me, that’s what it is, ”said Gina. “It doesn’t matter what happens. People always want their hair done. If their hair is beautiful, it makes it feel better about themselves.
It was devastating to lose the old location because of the renovations. Working 12 hours a day for three months, the Fortinos have completely transformed the old Times-Picayune office into a full-service salon. The same time and attention has been devoted to the new location of Belle Terre. While the new salon exudes an elegant atmosphere, Gino has kept his “man cave” room for barber services.
As Gino lifted the ceilings, installed the floors and put the finishing touches on the walls of the new location, some people joked that he would have to do home renovations full time. But Gino reminded them that hair has been his passion for over 40 years, and that won’t change anytime soon.
Gino worked at Metairie before coming to LaPlace to care for his mother after Hurricane Katrina. His wife, Gina, went to cosmetology school and always had a passion for hairdressing and makeup. She resumed her studies and finally followed her passion 15 years ago after rubbing shoulders with Gino while working in a salon. Soon after, the couple became a dream team and opened their own boutique.
Some wonder how it is possible for a husband and wife to work together so transparently. For Gino and Gina, owning a business together is the easiest thing in the world.
“It’s an absolute joy. When I’m not there, he misses me. We really have a passion for hair and we are a great team, ”said Gina.
Gino and Gina are both amazing in color and fit. While Gino also does a barber, Gina specializes in makeup and updos for weddings and formal events. G&G Hair Designs also offers waxing and other small services.
Among the experienced team are master stylists Ashley Clement and Linda Granier. The whole team participates in on-going training and in-depth training to help community members feel better.
St. John’s Parish Economic Development Director Stanley Bienemy hopes new business openings like this will spur development along the Belle Terre coordidor and make the parish a better place to live and work.
The opening hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday to Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. Walk-ins are welcome.
