The best hair oil for every hair type, revealed

Whether it’s daily, regular styling Color changes or loosening of the split end cuts, it seems we all have a flaw in keeping our hair in tip top shape. But whatever your complaints, a good hair oil just might be the hero you’re looking for.

Hair oils are often confused with serums, but like Louise Garbutt, Creative Director at Aveda Gina Conway explains, the two products actually have completely different uses. “ A silicone serum is ultimately a styling product – it needs to be applied to dry hair to tame frizz. Most contain special light reflectors to add immense shine to the surface. In contrast, hair oils are more treatment-oriented and dig a little deeper, ”she says.

So where a silicone-based serum will coat your hair to smooth frizz and improve shine, an oil can actually penetrate fibers and nourish follicles, working to restore and repair in the long run.

But here’s the thing: The right hair oil for you might not necessarily be the one your best friend doesn’t swear by, as hair care is rarely a one-size-fits-all situation.

“Just like the rest of our products, we need to target our hair oils to specific concerns,” Garbutt says. ‘Coconut oil is still the holy grail because of its moisture-retaining properties: it’s perfect for particularly dehydrated hair. For coarser, frizz-prone hair, she recommends thicker argan oil. What about weak hair? ‘Look for something containing castor oil. It’s protein based, so it works to strengthen every strand. Finally, jojoba oil is an unsung hero of dry and irritated scalps. “Surprisingly, it has the same chemical structure as the sebum produced by our scalp, so it’s great for dryness and dandruff while softening your ends.

Fortunately, today’s beauty shelves now have a hair oil for every hair type, and we’ve rounded up the best, here.
